Salamander study trip to Laurel Fork in Highland County


After a stop at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Greenbank, WV (and a stop at Henry's for last-minute items), we had a picnic lunch atop Gaudineer Knob.


The foggy/misty/rainy weather obscured the wonderful view from the knob. The photo below is from a trip Jane took in April to have the old-growth area ("Gaudineer Scenic Area") incorporated into the Old Growth Forest Network.


The root network from an uprooted spruce in the virgin timber area.


Near our campsite at Locust Spring, the vernal pool that was all-water in April (below) had filled in with grass and cinnamon ferns.


In camp, participants decided to hang their food and garbage in a maple tree.

Polyphemus moth outside Warren Hall on the DSLCC campus.


A snail climbs up conglomerate rock in the Gaudineer Scenic Area.
