We made a short stop at the Greenbank National Radio Astronomy Observatory to
visit the Greenbank Science Center. The thermal imaging display is always popular.
Next on the itinerary was Gaudineer Knob and Scenic Area. The knob has some great views
and the scenic area is an "old growth" forest left behind by a surveying error in the
early 20th Century.
Finally we reached our destination - the Locust Spring campground in the Laurel Fork area
of Highland County.
Our campsite.
After supper, a group of hikers from England emerged from the Locust Spring Run Trail
and announced that they were lost! They had started on a hike that was supposed to have
been about 6 miles. By the time they got to us, they had hiked about 12 miles.
Fortunately, we were able to connect them with their vehicle - parked about 2 1/2 miles
down the Forest Service road.
"Fred" the garter snake loved his home in a hollow tree in the middle of our campsite.
