Forestry Study in Greenbrier State Forest

We started at Young's Nature Trail to get to our study sites along Black Bear Trail and Old Fields Trail. Click on the photo for a larger version.

Here's a version with the Governor's School staff as well.

Most of the day was spent counting and measuring trees, saplings, seedlings, and shrubs along a 50-m transect.

We examine ground cover in a square meter plot.

It hands-and-knees time to count seedlings and shrubs in a 5-meter-square plot.

We have to identify and measure trees at each site. What kind of tree is this?

Measuring the DBH of a tree.

And, of course, all our hard-earned data must be accurately recorded.

The evening activities start with the dreaded, but ultimately enjoyable, Great Governor's School Talent Show.
They finish with a "Night Sounds" presentation and night journaling.

Today's Critters

Both groups came across the spiny Buck Moth Caterpillar. You don't want to touch this one!

The Great Spangled Fritillary butterfly. This one was missing half of it's right hind wing.
