Salamander study trip to Laurel Fork in Highland County

We made a short stop at the Greenbank National Radio Astronomy Observatory to visit the Greenbank Science Center. The main radio telescope is very impressive.

The thermal imaging display in the Science Center is always popular.

In the Science Center we met "Reo", a dog who was in preliminary training to be a service dog.

Next on the itinerary was Gaudineer Knob and Scenic Area. The knob has a magical spruce forest and a great view. The scenic area is an "old growth" forest left behind by a surveying error in the early 20th Century.

Getting back on the bus to leave Gaudineer Knob.

Our destination - the Locust Spring campground in the Laurel Fork area of Highland County.

Our campsite.

We've never seen Lady Slipper orchids here before, but this year there were several in a patch near the campground.
